SMP optics are available in receptacled or pigtailed packages. The pigtailed package shown consists of a small PCB boardlet that uses edge wrap vias to make electrical connections. The boardlet package includes a low cost plastic frame to provide mechanical protection for SMP optical function. This boardlet package is very easily soldered into a transceiver or motherboard PCB. The receptacled package shown is a coaxial, 3.8 mm TO-can equivalent design. A simple, clam-shell design which is self-aligning and has a press fit, allows for very low cost assembly. The external package form factor for SMP packages can be easily changed.
